Author Nydia Hetherington has been creating worlds in her head since she was a child in Leeds, dreaming about fairies and the sea. She channeled that energy into…well, a lot of things: working as an actor, a clown, and eventually creative writing.
She stopped by the Bunker to talk with Brad about her first book, A Girl Made of Air. And David Bowie. She loves David Bowie.
About Nydia Hetherington
Nydia’s first memories are of the Isle of Man, where she lived as a small child. When her family relocated to Leeds, she grew up dreaming of fairies and of the sea (she still does). In her early twenties she moved to London to embark on an acting career, then to Paris, where she continued her theatre training before creating a theatre company and becoming a clown. Returning to London a decade later, she worked in a shoe shop while studying for a creative writing degree at Birkbeck University.
To keep the wolf from the door she’s had many jobs, including working in shops, cafes and kitchens, sometimes in offices and most recently in an art gallery. These days she lives on the edge of London with her husband and cat. Nydia’s favourite books often have a touch of the magical about them. At the same time, she loves fierce writing that reaches into the depths of the human experience.
Music is important to Nydia, both as a writer and for general existence. She is a massive fan of David Bowie.
