Review: Sister Dear, by Hannah Mary McKinnon

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Hannah Mary McKinnon pulled off a nifty trick in this story, like a magician using misdirection to keep you looking in the wrong places all while doing her work right in front of you.

The story follows Eleanor Hardwicke, who finds out that the man she believed was her dad…wasn’t. Instead, she was the product of an affair and cast aside by her biological father, who continued living a life of luxury with his other family. A family that included Eleanor’s heretofore unknown—and seemingly perfect—half-sister, Victoria.

So, Eleanor sets out to get what she believes is rightfully hers. And chaos ensues.

I don’t want to get too deeply into the plot because the joy of a thriller is letting everything unfold in front of you. But I’ll say this: Hannah created two really compelling, complicated, and fascinating characters, and she let the reader discover them in bits and pieces. And, I never felt short-changed in the narrative. None of the character swerves felt out of left field, which is a big downer for me when I’m reading.

Find yourself a good beach, or a nice soft, make some tea, and settle back to enjoy this amazing thriller.
